Believe & Achieve® Program (Children 8-11)
Who is this program for?
This program is wonderful for little ones ages 8-11 who are struggling with their weight.
How many kids are suffering from obesity in this country?
According to the National Institute of Kidney Disease and Diabetes more than 30% of children in the USA have significant weight issues. See the report here.
Why is it so important to treat obesity in kids?
As someone who has been obese for 45 years of my 51 years I can tell you that addressing your child’s weight issues now will improve his/her physical and emotional health. As you know children suffering with weight issues are at an increase risk for cardiovascular disease, joint problems, diabetes, respiratory problems, bullying, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, suicide, and other physical and psychological issues.
What services are offered for the parent/guardian?
The parents/guardians of the patient are required to participate in a weekly group. The group serves 2 purposes: first it provides emotional support to the parent/guardian along with education and guidance regarding their children’s nutritional and physical activity plan. Second, it gives the child comfort to know that the parent is intricately involved in the child’s success. Lastly, some parents/guardians are struggling with weight issues themselves and the groups provide education that may help the adult manage his/her own health concerns.
Do I need to stay with my child when he/she is in the clinic?
Yes parents are required to wait for their children while he/she is receiving care at the appointment
How is your program different from others that I’ve tried for my child?
Our programs are not “quick fixes” and, as such, go beyond just providing a meal plan and a list of exercises. You and your child will participate in a comprehensive program that has been designed for your child’s long-term success. In addition, the ultimate goal is to not only help your child make long-lasting changes (i.e., changes related to nutrition, TV time, sleep, stress management, relationship with food, etc.) but to also support the entire family emotionally. It’s difficult to make changes some times but our staff is trained to assist your child and you with moving toward a healthier lifestyle.
I have a child older than 11 years old, do you have other programs for him/her?
Yes we do! We have the OPTIFAST for teens program that includes partial meal replacement (e.g. breakfast and lunch with a meal at dinnertime). This program can also be tailored to use all whole foods instead of partial meal replacements. For more information about this program click here.
Do I need clearance from my child’s pediatrician?
Yes. We work very closely with each child’s pediatrician to ensure that your child can safely participate in our program. Your child’s pediatrician would need to complete our clearance form prior to your child starting the program. You can download that form here. Once completed please fax the form to 909-354-3173 or bring it to your child’s first appointment.
